How Artwork Is Honoring the Memory of Randy Hankamer

Sometimes a person’s generosity catches you by surprise. Joanne Hankamer knows the feeling.Mosaic

Recently she found out that a dear family friend sponsored a tile in the Dell Seton at UT Mosaic in memory of her husband Randy Hankamer.

"My husband’s life and death had a profound effect on our friend, but I didn’t know just how much until this gift,” Joanne said.

A tile with Randy’s name will be part of the Dell Seton at UT Mosaic.

This 14-foot-long mosaic, designed around the theme “Picture a Healthy Community,” will be displayed in the lobby of Dell Seton Medical Center at UT when it opens in May 2017.

“Seton understands the importance of family and community and how we are all strengthened by supporting each other,” added Joanne. “Every stroke of every marker for every drawing for every tile represents collective stories.”

In addition to her husband being honored on the mosaic, Joanne also contributed by drawing a piece of artwork for the mosaic.

The art Joanne created for the mosaic was close to her heart. “Randy and I loved to walk, and my drawing is of a palm leaf from a plant in our neighborhood.

“Randy’s illness required us to travel to Houston for his care. Thanks to this new teaching hospital, many others won’t have to leave Austin. This will be an incredible benefit to our community.”
